Why I serve

For pretty much as long as I can remember, my mother neglected her physical well-being. My mother lived to be 74 years of age. While some might conclude that she lived a full life, that perhaps her choices didn't have negative repercussions, I assure you this is far from fact. You see, her lifestyle choices over the years resulted in a decreased ability to move and do things that she enjoyed. Lack of enjoyment gave way to depressions. She experienced a worsening of prior medical conditions and an ever increasing number of ailments including diabetes mellitus, which ultimately took her life, congestive heart failure, and early onset dementia. Her ever increasing weight reeked havoc on her joints causing constant pain. She was in her 40s when she was diagnosed with diabetes. Her health continued to decline leading to an increased number of doctor and emergency room visits. We all know how expensive that can be especially when you add in the cost of prescriptions. Yet her choices didn't change. She didn't get it. I didn't either at the time.   Ten years later, I was assisting her with household activities as her physical and cognitive abilities declined. At first it was once a week, then several times a week. Soon, my visits were daily and her last few years saw my visits increase to 2-3 times a day. What I discovered through all this is just how ‘normal’ this lifestyle had become. It was as though this is how a person is supposed to age. Well, it doesn't have to be that way.  While I regret not being able to help her more, I realize there are things in this life we can control and things we can't. Additionally, there are things we might be able control to some degree, so we should at least make the attempt. I know more now and always seek to learn more and I want to share that with the world. As I have  become more familiar with conditions like hers, I've learned just how much is preventable. Hint: nearly everything she was going through was preventable to some degree. For whatever reasons, she wasn't ready or willing.  My mother was a tough lady, she was old school. She instilled in me a sense of self-reliance and independence that helped me through many a tough time.  Even with her....shortcomings she taught me, she inspired me. She is missed.

My husband gifted me three training sessions with Eric for my 42nd birthday. I was initially hesitant and rescheduled with Eric several times (thank you for your patience, Eric!).  Before I started working with Eric, I was having a lot of back and shoulder pain after long days at work. I was stiff when getting out of bed in the morning and I was dreading getting older. 7 months later, I'm more nimble when I wake up at 5:30 AM, ready for my class. I have more shoulder flexibility and strength than some of the 20 year-olds with whom I work. My back pain has almost completely resolved and I can do more push-ups than I ever thought possible. I cannot wait to reach my goal of pull-ups! Most important to me is that Eric (and every other member) has been supportive, welcoming and non-judgemental. Eric focuses on technique and stresses the importance of recovery and listening to your body, while also encouraging me to push my limits. Thank you, Eric!

Eric is that rare combination of inspiration, determination, organization and humor.  I came to Tacoma Wellness Studio with a concern that I didn't have the fitness level to take on a demanding course.  But Eric allayed my fears, encouraging me as I embarked on a rigorous and well designed program to improve my strength and mobility.  In the year since I have been going to Tacoma Wellness Studio, I have seen a transformation in my physical health, as well as an improvement in my mindset. Tacoma Wellness Studio has created a welcoming community of diverse individuals who support one another, which makes all the difference.  Thank you Eric for your guidance.

I'm in my early 70s and have been working on fitness training for six years, the past five with Eric. At my age, weight and balance training are key to strength and mobility. And it shows! A new massage therapist commented on my muscle tone last week, noting that it's unusual for my age group! Thank you, Eric, for all the encouragement and (dreaded) push ups. It's paying off!

Hey Eric, I just wanted to say hey and update you on my progress! First off I want to say thanks for all of your mentorship, I've gained notoriety with my friends in regard to my body recomposition and they actually are asking me for advice and help. I'm hitting personal records on a consistent basis. I hit a squat PR of 230 and a deadlift of 250. With solid form too mind you. I actually got my body fat percentage tested the other day and I finally hit my goal of 11% body fat. With college classes starting I finally feel good to maintain weight, and focus on school as well as my physical health. I just wanted to update you and say thanks, you can count me as another success story!

I'm starting to emerge from 2 years of sitting in front of a screen 10+ hours a day toward pain-free movement. Trainer Eric Davis is a major feature in this effort. With some injuries to protect while strengthening, Eric's been phenomenal in working with me every session to see what's possible and to support gradual, safe progress. After feeling pretty demoralized for so long, I feel like myself, again. If you have an interest in getting strong safely, with smart movement and workouts that are really well-designed, hit up Eric. No matter what your fitness, history of exercise, age, anxiety about gyms, etc. He will put you at ease right away and help you grow. He's the best coach I've ever had.
